The state of Axarquía’s beaches has seen a large number of complaints from residents, tourists and several political parties all happening at the height of the summer season.

Coastal towns that include Nerja, Torrox, Torre del Mar, Chilches, Benajarafe, Almayate and La Cala del Moral have all seen their beaches eroded by strong winds in recent weeks causing sand to blow away and create steep drops.

The boss of Malaga province’s coastal agency Ángel Gómez explained that the cause of the erosion was a “natural phenomenon caused by persistent westerly winds”.

He went on to add that bringing in machines to fix the problem which is particularly bad on La Torrecilla beach in Nerja and the Playa del Poniente beach, near the Café del Mar area in Torre del Mar, would “create further complaints from swimmers” and “cause even more disruption”.
